Workshop on Green Public Procurement in Cement and Steel

On 26 December, GreenTree Global conducted a workshop on Green Public Procurement (GPP) in the cement and steel sectors under the Green Public Procurement in Steel and Cement (GPPSC) Initiative.
The initiative is a strategic effort to embed sustainability into procurement practices across two of the most carbon-intensive industries—steel and cement. By leveraging the government’s purchasing power, the programme seeks to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies, support industrial decarbonization, and promote sustainable manufacturing practices. With public procurement playing a decisive role in large-scale infrastructure and housing projects, the initiative positions green procurement as a powerful lever for market transformation by creating demand for environmentally responsible products and establishing performance benchmarks aligned with India’s climate objectives.

The workshop was delivered by Mr. Anurag Bajpai, Director & Head – Sustainability, GreenTree Global, and brought together architects and real estate developers for an in-depth discussion on sustainable material choices in the construction sector. The session provided a platform for knowledge exchange on the role of procurement in reducing embodied carbon while enhancing the overall performance and durability of buildings.

Key discussions focused on the adoption of low-carbon cement and responsibly sourced steel, highlighting their potential to significantly reduce lifecycle emissions associated with construction projects. The workshop also emphasised the integration of green procurement criteria into material selection, project planning, and execution, enabling participants to align sustainability goals with technical, commercial, and regulatory considerations.

A central theme of the session was the translation of existing policy frameworks and sustainability guidelines into practical, on-ground procurement decisions. Through real-world examples and interactive discussions, participants gained insights into how green public procurement can be operationalised across different stages of construction projects.

By strengthening awareness and building capacity among key stakeholders, GreenTree Global continues to play an active role in advancing resource-efficient and climate-responsive construction practices. The workshop reflects GreenTree Global’s ongoing commitment to supporting market transformation, fostering collaboration across the value chain, and contributing to India’s broader transition towards low-carbon and sustainable development pathways.
